Library Augustinerkloster, Erfurt
The design concept takes the style of the old library and tackles it on an abstract level. The historical library, which is cuboid in shape and has a steep roof, forms the starting point for the concept. The design brings in new functions and uses, such as a stairwell, WC facilities, an entrance to the memorial site, and a foyer. These rooms are not defined as self-contained spaces but are integrated into the historical basic design, which is typical of the city. The historical style and the „new“ elements „respond“ to one another. The result is a building design which has sculptural qualities and can evolve informally both inwards and outwards.
